The World for Your Valentine

Have you been contemplating what gift to select for your special Valentine?  “The World” is at your fingertips.  It may not be a trip around the world in a private jet, but The World of Pinot Noir will certainly provide a romantic getaway on March 3rd and 4th in Santa Barbara.  Indulge yourself with a weekend stay at the luxurious Bacara Resort and Spa. Sample a vast array of Pinot Noir wines from around the world paired with superb food.

The Pacific Ocean is always close at the Bacara Resort and Spa.  Magnificent views will sweep you away as you wander down colorful steps or spend time relaxing on benches throughout the resort.



The annual two-day event begins on Friday, March 4th.  Be prepared to enjoy many local foods prepared by outstanding chefs paired with fabulous wines at sparkling brunches, lunches and dinners.   One of many seminars will include Sommeliers from across the United States, a Burgundy seminar and a Pinot and Pâté Pairing.  A Focus Tasting on Friday and a Grand Tasting on Saturday are highlights of The World of Pinot Noir.


The Grand Tastings on Friday and Saturday are always a highlight.  Last year we explored Australian wines.  There were plenty to sample and an expert at the ready to answer all questions.


One of the wineries representing Oregon was Panther Creek Cellars.  Tony Rynders, the consulting winemaker, and Anita Musi told us about the little-known vineyards in the Willamette Valley from which they purchase their high quality fruit.


Also, from Oregon was Argyle Winery.  Since 1987 they have been producing world-class méthode Champenois Sparkling wine from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay fruit.


We even did a French Champagne tasting.  Simon-Charles Lepage and Davy Dosnon are a team creating La Maison Dosnon & Lepage and producing “Grand Vins de Champagne.”


We found Katie Grassini, of Grassini Family Vineyards, with her husband, Dean McKillen, visiting Eric Flanagan of Flanagan Winery.  I am sure there was some comparison of the Sonoma Flanagan Winery with the wines of the Central Coast.


From Santa Maria, on our Central Coast, we found the small winery, Lumen.  The winery may be small, but the winemaker has a big name since she was the first female winemaker on the Central Coast.  Meet Lane Tanner and Will Henry!  Make sure you stop by and see them this year and sip their extraordinary wines.


Another required stop this year should be to meet the delightful Karen Steinwachs of Seagrape Wine Company.  She produces small lots of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from the Santa Rita Hills.  Sipping her Pinot is special and will make you want to take home more to continue sippping.


We found endless cheeses to pair with our Pinot at C’est Cheese.  This Santa Barbara specialty cheese shop offers over 120 varieties and brings many to sample at The World of Pinot Noir.



Bacara’s Chef Vincent Lesage provided impeccable service, along with tasty hand passed hor d’oeuvres…….


as well as a Mediterranean station.  Included was spiced hummus, baba ganoush, tzatziki spread, sun-dried tomato artichoke spread and assorted grilled vegetables with a balsamic drizzle.



Speaking of the Bacara, if you want to take a Pinot break, I have a secret diversion for you.  If you love spicy Bloody Marys, be sure and visit Bacara Bar. The picture tells the whole story.


For a true “Santa Maria Style BBQ” schedule a meal with Chef Frank Ostini of the Hitching Post II Restaurant  in Buellton.  He will again be preparing a wood fire dinner where you will find anything can be cooked over his red oak fire.
